Danville Lost Two Grocery Anchors This Year. Here's Where the Weekly Shop Goes Now

"STORE CLOSURE. This store will permanently close on Friday, July 17th." DanvilleSanRamon reported that paper signs with those words were taped to the entry doors and checkout stations at Lucky California in Sycamore Square in June. By then many of the shelves and freezer cases were only partly stocked.

Six months earlier, Draeger's Market had closed its store at Blackhawk Plaza. Between them, the two closures took out the full-service grocers at Danville's southern and eastern edges. Trader Joe's, Lunardi's and the Saturday farmers' market all sit on about a quarter mile of Railroad Avenue downtown. That concentration is the real change in 2026, and it will last at least as long as the Lucky space takes to rebuild.

Two closures, one year

The dates are worth laying out, because the second closure landed before anything had filled the first.

  1. January 25, 2026. Draeger's permanently closes its Blackhawk Plaza store, where it had been an anchor tenant since 2007, according to SFGATE. The store's address was 4100 Blackhawk Plaza Circle. Earlier that month, owner F. John Draeger told DanvilleSanRamon that "the declining condition and maintenance of the Blackhawk Plaza Shopping Center has strongly influenced our decision."
  2. July 17, 2026. Lucky California closes at 660 San Ramon Valley Blvd. Phil Keene of The Save Mart Companies told DanvilleSanRamon the decision was "based on economic factors."
  3. September 8, 2026. Danville's chief of planning, David Crompton, tells the Planning Commission that the Sycamore Square property owner has an agreement with Whole Foods for the old Lucky space. The deal is still in a contingency period, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The Lucky closure ended a long run at that address. The store had been an anchor at Sycamore Square for decades. It became Albertson's after a 1999 acquisition, went back to the Lucky name in 2007 after Save Mart bought the brand, and was converted to the Lucky California concept in 2019.

Where Danville's remaining grocers actually are

The Chronicle listed the grocers Danville still has as Safeway, Trader Joe's, Lunardi's Markets and Smart & Final Extra.

Store Address Posted hours
Trader Joe's 85 Railroad Ave. 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, week of Oct. 12, 2026
Danville Farmers' Market 205 Railroad Ave., at Prospect Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., year-round
Lunardi's Markets 345 Railroad Ave. 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily
Smart & Final Extra Green Valley Shopping Center, Diablo Road Confirm with the store
Danville International Market 508 San Ramon Valley Blvd. Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Safeway 3496 Camino Tassajara 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily

Trader Joe's, the Saturday farmers' market and Lunardi's all sit within the 85-to-345 block range of Railroad Avenue. The farmers' market is certified and runs every Saturday of the year, per the California Department of Food and Agriculture's current market list, so it keeps going into winter.

Smart & Final Extra opened in Green Valley Shopping Center on Diablo Road, with a grand opening planned for April 2017, the East Bay Times reported at the time. The only hours we could find for it come from an older listing, so check with the store before a late-evening trip.

Safeway is the outlier. Its Danville store locator shows a single location, on Camino Tassajara, far to the east of downtown. It also has the longest hours in town by a wide margin, from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day.

Danville International Market is a smaller specialty store at 508 San Ramon Valley Blvd., on the same boulevard as Sycamore Square. It carries Middle Eastern, Russian and Greek groceries along with Persian food.

The posted closure notice pointed Lucky shoppers to the chain's store at 21001 San Ramon Valley Blvd. in San Ramon. Whole Foods doesn't operate in Danville yet. The Chronicle says its nearest stores are in San Ramon and Walnut Creek.

What "about a year" means for the Lucky space

The Whole Foods news spread quickly, and the details explain why the gap at Sycamore Square won't close soon.

Crompton told commissioners the property owner would demolish the interior, concrete floor included, and hand Whole Foods an empty shell to build out. He estimated the work could take about a year. The Danville Dispatch pointed out that this is a construction estimate, not an opening date. It also reported that the Town had received no application as of early August, and that Whole Foods itself had not announced a Danville store.

Visible changes outside should be limited. Crompton described new signage, some work near the front of the building, and electric vehicle chargers in the parking lot, which the project is expected to require. The store would stay within the former Lucky footprint and not expand past it.

The deal was still contingent as of the September reporting. If it goes through, a year of interior work would begin only after that, and the clock doesn't start until the contingency clears and permits move.

The rest of Sycamore Square keeps running

Sycamore Square covers 650 to 730 San Ramon Valley Blvd., according to its owner, La Jolla Management. The center's directory on Shopping in Danville still lists these neighbors of the old grocery space:

  • CVS Pharmacy
  • Melo's Pizza and Pasta
  • YogaSix
  • The UPS Store
  • H&R Block
  • Made to Fit Alterations
  • Modern Nails
  • Creative Paint
  • All Fur Love Grooming
  • Learn and Play Montessori School

That same directory still shows Lucky, so it hasn't been updated since July. Treat the rest of the list as a starting point, not a confirmed roster. For now, a pharmacy run, a package drop-off and a yoga class can still happen in one stop there. Groceries now take a separate trip.

Blackhawk Plaza's empty anchor

The east side of town is in a slower and less predictable position. The large building Draeger's left was still vacant in a September DanvilleSanRamon report, one of several open spaces at the plaza.

What happens to that space depends on who ends up owning the plaza. In July, DanvilleSanRamon reported that the owner said in a bankruptcy filing it planned to sell the property. By late September, the Danville Dispatch reported that a court application to hire a sales team had been filed. The plaza wasn't listed yet, and a fall offering was expected. JLL is still the day-to-day manager, working under restructuring officer Howard Grobstein. The plaza's ponds and fountains have been restored, and other maintenance is underway.

Draeger's has said it isn't planning a return. The grocer now runs two stores, in Menlo Park and Los Altos. John Draeger told SFGATE he doesn't expect to open another store, though he "would consider it" if a location were compelling.

How the map reads this fall

Draeger's in the east and Lucky in the south were the two closures this year. The Lucky space waits on a contingent Whole Foods agreement, and the Draeger's space waits on a plaza sale that hasn't been listed. In the meantime, Danville's grocery shopping runs through 85 and 345 Railroad Avenue, the Saturday market at Prospect, Diablo Road, and a Safeway out on Camino Tassajara that stays open until 2 a.m.

Shopping-center turnover like this does show up in how buyers see an address, sometimes before any sign changes.
